California Broken Leg Lawyers

We often take our legs for granted. Our legs are like wheels attached to our bodies, which keep us in motion. When we injure our legs, the first thing we lose is our mobility and independence.

It usually takes quite a bit of force to break the bones of the leg, unless the bones have been weakened by a pre-existing condition such as osteoporosis, cancer, tumors or bone cysts. Ultimately, if the amount of force put on a bone is greater than what it can handle, the bone will break.

Such a break may occur through trauma, which involves a large force or injury such as car, motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle accidents, skiing injuries or falls. The human leg consists of four bones - the femur, the patella, tibia and fibula. After such an accident these bones may break into two or more pieces resulting in an inability to move the injured leg.

If a broken bone has been exposed to the outside either by a cut over the fracture or by the bone sticking out through the skin, it is called an open fracture or compound fracture. Sometimes, repetitive overuse of the leg, such as the movements in distance running, can result in a stress fracture. This is common among athletes, many of whom suffer from knee injuries.

The major symptoms of a broken leg are pain, swelling, and deformity. A broken leg can be very obvious but sometimes may require an x-ray to diagnose. Pain caused by a broken bone is typically severe and moving the broken bone will increase the severity of the pain. Swelling and bruising in the injured area are also common symptoms. Deformity of the leg may occur as:

  • Shortening: The broken leg appears shorter than the unaffected leg
  • Rotation: The leg below the break is twisted
  • Angulation: The leg bends at the break instead of at the joint

A fractured leg is usually treated by either immobilizing the bones or through surgery. That means the recovery stage for a broken leg could last for weeks or months. You most likely will not be able to work during the time your fracture heals. If your injury occurred on the job such as at a construction site or in a factory setting, you will most likely be eligible for a workers compensation claim.

If your injuries were caused by someone's negligence, you should receive monetary damages for injuries to help pay for medical expenses and loss of income.
