California Hand Fracture AttorneysThe bones of our hand normally line up perfectly, allowing us to perform a host of everyday functions from holding or grasping an object to typing and preparing food. When you break one of these bones, this entire alignment is thrown off, causing pain and stiffness and deterring you from doing the things you normally do with ease. You need treatment to restore functionality and to relieve the pain, which could be severe at times. Some of the most common symptoms of a fracture in the bones of your hand or wrist are pain, tenderness, swelling and lack of mobility in the injured area. For example, if you break your finger, you may not be able to move your finger. Sometimes, you can break a bone in your hand and not even realize it. That often happens to a lot of people with the scaphoid bone in the wrist, which is a boat-shaped bone located on the outermost side near the thumb of the hand. People with such a fracture may think they have a sprained wrist instead of a fracture and that's because there is no obvious deformity and even very little swelling. Sudden wrist injuries are usually caused by accidents - from falls to auto accidents or sports-related accidents. They include broken bones, dislocations, and sprains. Sudden injury can occur from trying to break a fall with your hand, or from direct impact to the wrists. The most obvious symptoms of a finger fracture are a shortened finger or a depressed knuckle. Signs of a wrist fracture include pain, which may subside for a whole, but then return as a deep, dull ache. The biggest challenge in treating wrist fractures is keeping the bones in alignment during healing. If the bones shift, your wrist can lose its shape and function and it can also lead to long-term problems such as arthritis and loss of motion. Hand and wrist fractures are treated with a splint or case to help realign the bones; with surgery to set the bone and stabilize it; with metal bars outside the hand; a permanent plate inside the wrist to secure the bones; with a bone graft; and physical therapy, which helps in recovery as well as regaining mobility. Hand and wrist injuries occur more often on the job than we realize. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a highly common repetitive-motion injury on the job for most people, which is associated with regular use of a computer keyboard. It usually affects your writing hand and begins with pain and tingling or numbness at the base of the thumb. If not treated, the symptoms may progress to a weakened grip, severe pain in the forearm or shoulder, or permanent loss of muscle in the hand.
