California Arm Fracture LawyersA broken arm is probably one of the most common types of bone fractures. In fact, one in 20 fractures involves the upper bone arm, known as the humerus. It is common for children to break the lower arm bones, known as radius and ulna. Arm fractures are usually caused when you slip and fall, especially when you fall on an outstretched hand. These types of fractures are also common in auto accidents. Most people know right away if their arm is broken, because there may be a snap or a loud cracking sound. The broken arm may appear deformed and be swollen, bruised and bleeding. A person with a broken arm usually experiences extreme pain at the site of the injury. The pain is heightened when the broken arm is made to move. Decreased sensation or inability to move the limb may indicate nerve damage. It could take weeks or months to regain normal use of the injured arm. Appropriate treatment can affect how soon you recover from a fracture. The most important aspect of treating fractures lies in determining which fractures should be treated with outpatient care and which ones require the patient to be admitted to the hospital. Most people who break their arm will be treated in the emergency room. A majority of such fractures will require a splint or partial cast to help stabilize the broken bones. Some fractures, especially those that occur in the upper arm or shoulder, may require to be immobilized in a sling. The physician will also most likely prescribe medication for pain control and to decrease swelling. The wounds that usually warrant hospitalization are fractures involving nerve damage; compound fractures, which means the bone has pierced through the skin and become exposed; blood vessel damage; and other complex fractures involving multiple breaks. Sometimes, these injuries are preventable. It's always a good idea to wear appropriate personal safety equipment as protection. Always wear a seat belt when you travel or use wrist guards for in-line skating or skateboarding. Wear appropriate pads for contact sports. But many times, these fractures are caused because someone wasn't paying attention. For example, the supermarket or departmental store that didn't bother to keep its floors clean or spill-free. Numerous auto accidents are also caused by negligent drivers who are for example speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
